It amazes me that it has been deemed necessary to post No Swimming signs around retention ponds. Especially here in Florida, I’ve assumed it’s common knowledge for everyone that standing water, unless fed by a spring, is guaranteed to make you sick with some sort of amoeba or parasite.
Yet, somehow, somewhere, there must be people out there that think a small pond is a good place to cool off, as these signs are posted in front of practically every body of water larger than a puddle.
It seemed like an appropriate writing prompt for a Florida story, something Karen Russell would likely enjoy.
